How to go about the process
Initial step is made by the employer to gain government approval for hiring the potential international candidate. The approval documentation is recognized as Labour Market Impact Assessment.
The Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) overlooks the LMIA that is sent to the employer, ensuring that the candidate at hand will contribute a positive impact on the Canadian market. There are different categories in LMIA, such as:
- Low-wage: Paid under median wage as per the federal/provincial law.
- High-wage: Paid median wage at or above the federal/provincial law.
The employer must be able to indicate that they have reached out domestically to fill said positions before proceeding for international hiring. There is a charge for every temporary worker hired by the employer of CAD $1,000 for LMIA purposes (paid by employer). There are also some advertising requirements the employer must meet to hire said candidate. The candidate must be able to communnicate in English or French as per the Canadian requirement.
