Sponsor Process
As a collaborative process, both parties the applicant and the sponsor must submit an application which will be reviewed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) pending approval for permanent resident visa.
To be qualified for this program, the relating parties must have an established relationship as one of the following: Spouse, Common-Law partner or Conjugal partner (same sex marriage candidates can also apply through this program).
Sponsoring from outside of Canada
This is for candidates that have their partner living in Canada and the candidate lives outside. You can be in Canada and apply this way as well, you can also be permitted to travel to/from Canada during this application process. These applications are processed by Canadian visa offices in the country of origin or wherever last residency occured for a minimum of 1 year.
Sponsoring from inside of Canada
This application is typically pursued when both partners are together in Canada, granted the partner has some form of temporary visa for Canada. It is a more time consuming process, but there is a possibility of gaining an open work permit (for the interval of the application) which helps to gain a head start in the Canadian job market.
Additional Information
- Sponsor is held financially responsible for their partner for 3 years from time of recieving residency.
- If you come as a partner yourself, than you cannot sponsor a spouse to come to Canada for 5 years from time of recieving residency.
